Stands for Morris Garages which in 1921 was
the leading automobile retail outlet in the
city of Oxford. Cecil KIMBER was appointed
sales manager in 1921 and the company
flourished and became the MG Car Company Ltd
on 21st of July 1930. They used engines and
chassis from Morris but developed different
body styles with suspension and engine tweaks
they had considerable sucess over the years.
Noteably the Mille Miglia 1933 with the K3
MAGNETTE which was the most outstanding car
of its class breaking countless records in
its 1100 cc supercharged form. Buying one
would be the equivilant of walking into a
show room today and ordering a Formula One
car,it could reach speeds of130 mph.
The factory in Abingdon
closed in 1981 after years of mismanagement
by British Leyland. The name lived on with
the Metro, Maestro and Montego until the
arrival of the MG F in 1995 which is very
successful and revolutionary. MG has always
been known as the affordable sports car or
poor mans Ferrari.
